Community Engagement Message from the Executive Director

A joyful Memorial Day weekend to everyone!

As many of us look forward to the three-day weekend ahead, our 2020 Memorial Day observance seems more relevant than ever.

Although it wasn’t until 1968 when Congress officially passed the Uniform Holiday Act that recognized the last Monday of May as “Memorial Day,” the tradition of the holiday (originally called Decoration Day) began shortly after the end of the Civil War in 1865.  Established to honor those who gave their “full measure of devotion,” the day was somber, a time to reflect, give thanks and honor the fallen.  (For more on the history of Memorial Day, check this out on PBS: https://www.pbs.org/national-memorial-day-concert/memorial-day/history/ )

Today we honor new heroes: Modern-day warriors who continue to brave the frontlines during a global pandemic, giving their all, and some even sacrificing their lives to ensure our safety.  The battle is different than in past wars, but our gratitude resonates as deeply.

So this weekend, as many of us try to take a pause from managing our daily routines amidst COVID-19, please take a moment to think about all those who continue to fight to safeguard our families, our communities and our world.  We are ever grateful.

Stay well, stay strong!

Kathleen Maher,
Executive Director
