Community Engagement Message from the Executive Director

So, another week and another series of calamitous storms…and breathe.

From our friends throughout the south, right up into New York and Connecticut, I hope this finds everyone who was in the path of these dreadful storms safe and well…again.  2020 is certainly testing our resilience.

As some of you might not know, the Barnum Museum was struck by an EF1 tornado in 2010, with Hurricane Irene hitting in 2011, and Super Storm Sandy completing the trifecta of major storm impact in 2012.  The Barnum Museum has unyieldingly been battling back ever since.  Although the recovery might seem ‘slow’ to many, the work to revitalize and re-envision a historic landmark site is complicated, requiring the skill, talent and passion of innumerable champions.  However, the future Barnum Museum promises to be one of the country’s most innovative, immersive attractions that will captivate the imagination of a new audience of museum-goers, history-buffs and dedicated Barnum enthusiasts like you.  We are so fortunate and grateful for your encouragement and support.  You make our ongoing efforts purposeful and we are sincerely thankful.

The good message and our ‘lesson-learned’ from years of disaster recovery is that we, as a global community, are unceasingly strong, irrepressible and determined to spearhead forward.  Whether it be a storm or a pandemic, we all find the spirit inside to adapt, innovate and chart an alternative future onward.  It might seem ‘slow’ now, but time, patience, courage and creativity reveal glorious possibilities.  The show will certainly go on!

Stay safe, stay strong,

Kathleen Maher,
Executive Director
